Join Joe Robinson and the East Creek team for a 2 part wood firing workshop!

Start with an info session in April at Morning Ceramics Studio in Portland where we'll look at example pots, talk kilns and clays, and discuss ideal forms and making methods for wood firing.

Then, have 3 weeks to make up to 2 cubic feet of work for the East Creek Catenary Arch kiln (the ChickenCat) on your own. Want to get a head start? Most Cone 10 clays from Georgies are great! Our top reccomendations for functional ware are Deschutes White with Old Hickory or Umpqua White. (ask about woodfired clay bodies, and Georgies will help)

Bring your work (or send with a friend) to East Creek on Friday, May 17 for a 3-day firing event. All firing materials are included, including liner glaze, wadding, and fuel. (and if you don't know what that means, no problem, we'll explain). All you need to bring is your bisque fired pieces, the rest is included.

We'll load the kiln on Friday 5/17, light the kiln Friday night, and fire through Sunday, May 19. During the firing, you'll have the opportunity to stoke wood, observe firing cones at work, and learn about the process in a supported environment with Joe and/or another experienced member of the East Creek crew.

While at East Creek, you can choose to camp out for free on our beautiful 20 acre campus, stay in a tiny cabin or bunkhouse for an extra fee, stay in nearby Willamina, or head home for the night. East Creek has plenty of cooking resources including stove, oven, microwave and grill in a shared outdoor kitchen for firing crew.

We will then unload the kiln on Saturday, May 24, revealing our treasures and talking about how/why things came out as they did. A lunch of homemade chili con carne is provided.

You may come and go as you please, it's not required to attend the firing all days. If you just want to come for a few hours, that's totally cool. Or if you're a die-hard, stay from loading to shutdown! The only requirement is that we have your pots for loading by Friday, March 10 at noon.
