Wheel Week: Skills Focus, Throwing Larger and Altering

Throwing Larger, 3 days instruction: July 8-10 10a-4p

Community Making Time, 2 days: July 11-12

Altering Forms, 2 days instruction: July 13-14 10a-4p

Join Joe Robinson to build new skills and throw larger on the potter's wheel. Then, continue on in the East Creek studio for 2 more unguided studio making days to hone your skills. Then, finish out the week with 2 days of altering forms, including distorting, cutting, carving, stretching, squaring, ovals, and more. You may join for the whole week, or just choose throwing larger, or just choose making. It's up to you!

Throwing Larger

We'll meet to discuss the current skill set of the group, then dive into making, instruction, and demos. You'll have the opportunity to receive lecture style throwing instruction as well as 1:1 coaching. Instruction emphasis is to grow from where you are- we'll get folks who throw 5" to throw 12", folks that throw 10" to throw 15", and folks that throw 15" will no longer be limited by vertical height considerations beyond kiln size. You'll see how to make larger, single part pots as well as how to attach multiple pieces for no-limits throwing. A 100 pound demo will be conducted. 

All the while, you'll be at your own wheel and able to work at your own pace. By the end of the instruction time, you'll have had the opportunity to directly address any challenge points with a master potter. The instruction period includes 50# of clay and 3cf bisque firing. Extra clay and bisque service is available at $15/bag and $10/cf

Making Period

After the 3 day instruction period, stick around at East Creek for two making days in the studio to cement in your new skills! The making period included up to 2cf bisque only, but no clay. You may bring your own or purchase clay and extra bisque service is available at $15/bag and $10/cf

Altering Forms

To conclude the week of skill building, we'll go back to the forms we produced as well as producing new forms for alteration. Alteration is simply something you do to a pot that's not part of the wheel throwing process.

While at East Creek, you may choose to book additional accomodation, camp for free, or stay off-property. East Creek's accomodations are rustic but comfortable and utilize a shared toilet, kitchen, and outdoor shower.
