Wheel Week: Throwing Large Masterclass
7 days instruction/demo/making: July 22-28 10a-4p
Join Joe Robinson for his premier summer throwing workshop offering, the Throwing Large Masterclass. In this 7 day workshop, all participants, including Joe, will be charged with building the largest wheel thrown pot of their life. This year, Joe will attempt a 300+lb. pot that's in excess of 5 feet tall.
The workshop will be broken into three sections, though they are not separately bookable. Day 4 is an opportunity to take a break. In the past, some participants have spent a night at the beach, gone home, etc.
Warm up, instruction, and coaching period: 2 days
We'll meet to discuss the current skill set of the group, then dive into making, instruction, and demos. You'll have the opportunity to receive lecture style throwing instruction as well as 1:1 coaching. Instruction emphasis is to grow from where you are- we'll get folks who throw 5" to throw 12", folks that throw 10" to throw 15", and folks that throw 15" will no longer be limited by vertical height considerations beyond kiln size. You'll see how to make larger, single part pots as well as how to attach multiple pieces for no-limits throwing. Several demos of growing size will be completed- expect to see 25, 50, 75, and 100 lb pieces made, both vessels and platter forms.
All the while, you'll be at your own wheel and able to work at your own pace. By the end of the instruction time, you'll have had the opportunity to directly address any challenge points with Joe.
Studio Time (Practice): 2 Days
We'll all work together in the studio for 2 days. This is an instructional time, though less formal and more coaching oriented. It's also a time to work through issues while in the presence of other artists and Joe as he makes more demo pieces, shares 1:1 input, and produces his own work. The second day of this time is a good time for rest, as this is a physically strenuous workshop. Some workshop participants have gone to the beach in the past, others have gone home, others have worked through the time.
Risk Taking and Wrap Up: 3 Days
This is when we push our new skills to the max and work to produce the largest pots any of us have ever thrown. We have 2 days to bring all of our skills together and produce the pieces; the final day is for trimming, finishing, and logistics considerations. During the 2 day period, Joe will produce a 12 piece, 300 lb piece.
