Soda Firing Week: Gas Soda

Join Joe Robinson for two days to learn about soda firing in East Creek's cross-draft, gas soda kiln. Then, continue on in the East Creek studio for 3 more unguided making days and a bisque on Thursday. Then, we'll load the gas soda kiln on Saturday and shut down the firing on Sunday evening. Return to East Creek the following Saturday to unload. 

You may join for the whole week, or just choose instruction or just choose making. It's up to you, and both options include 2 cubic feet of firing space!

Instruction Period

We'll meet to discuss the current skill set of the group, then dive into making, instruction, and demos. We will look at finished pots and talk about considerations, including clay, glaze, and material, for soda firing. All the while, you'll be at your own wheel and able to work at your own pace. By the end of the instruction time, you'll have a good sense of what's require to make successful pots for soda. The instruction period includes 25# of clay, 2cf bisque firing, and 2 cf soda firing. Extra clay and bisque service is available at $15/bag and $10/cf

Making Period

After the 2 day instruction period, stick around at East Creek for three making days in the studio to cement in your new skills! The making period included up to 2cf bisque only, but no clay. You may bring your own or purchase clay and extra bisque service at $15/bag and $10/cf. We will run a bisque on Thursday at 4:00p which will be ready for loading into the soda kiln on Saturday. Pieces made in any remaining time will be bisqued for pickup at the unloading.

Firing

We will fire the kiln on Saturday and Sunday. We'll begin loading and pot prep around noon on Saturday. All glaze, wadding, firing supplies, and portective equipment is provided by East Creek. We'll shut down on Sunday evening, and will unload the kiln together the following Saturday, July 6. 

You choose- whole week, just instruction, or just making! Either choice comes with 2 cf of soda kiln space per registration.

While at East Creek, you may choose to book additional accomodation, camp for free, or stay off-property. East Creek's accomodations are rustic but comfortable and utilize a shared toilet, kitchen, and outdoor shower. Cabins come with linens; bunkhouse comes with bottom sheet and mattress only, BYO bedding. See photos at eastcreekart.org
