Radius Studio Soda, Pit, and Raku Firing Weekend

Join Joe Robinson and Aubrey Sloan for two days of community and firing in our new gas soda kiln, pit kiln, and raku kilns at East Creek’s beautiful indoor/outdoor studio space.

Dates and Times:

• Informational Session: January 24th, 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM at Radius Studio
• Main Event: February 17th, 10:00 AM start - February 18th, Concluding at 8:00 PM
• Optional Kiln Unloading: February 22,  11:00 AM (or pick up in March from Radius Studio)

Event Overview:

Join instructors Joe Robinson and Aubrey Sloan for a weekend of community and firing. Experience gas soda kiln, pit firing, and raku kilns in a scenic indoor/outdoor studio. The event is beginner-friendly and includes two participation options:

Full Weekend: Soda firing, raku firing, pit firing,  pizza and camping:

• Cost: $195 per person
• Includes: -Informational session at Radius Studio -3 cubic feet of fired work (1cf Soda, 1cf Pit, 1cf Raku), -Pizza party! -Camping on East Creek property

Partial Weekend: Raku firing, Pit Firing, pizza, and camping:

• Cost: $95 per person
• Includes: -Informational session at Radius Studio -Firing of 6-10 pieces for Pit and/or Raku -Pizza party! -Camping on East Creek property

Detailed Schedule:

January 24th, 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM at Radius Art Studio: We will discuss what clays to use, the soda, pit, and raku firing process, look at physical examples of work from the kilns, talk about what to expect for the weekend, and answer questions from participants. This info session is not required, but suggested for those who are unfamiliar with the East Creek studio and/or soda/pit/raku firing.

Saturday, February 17:

10:00AM-Noon: Full weekend participants arrive with bisqued pots. We will discuss special wadding techniques, and prepare for loading.

Noon-3PM: Partial weekend participants arrive. We will work on glazing pots for raku, loading the soda kiln, and begin firing the raku kilns.

3-5PM: Instruction, prep, and loading of pit firing; continue raku firing

6-9PM: Pizza party! Joe will cook pizzas in the woodfire pizza oven. After dinner, participants who do not wish to camp can head back home. Any pieces that are not yet fired and left behind for finishing will be dropped back off at Radius Art Studio for ease of pickup.

Sunday, February 18: (optional, and all are welcome to participate)

10:30 AM: Unload Pit fire kiln

11Am-8PM: Continue firing gas soda kiln until 8:00 PM. Participants are welcome to head home at their leisure.  Any pieces that are not yet fired and left behind for finishing will be dropped back off at Radius Art Studio for ease of pickup.

Thursday, February 22: (optional for those who want to see the soda kiln unloaded)

11:00 AM: Unloading of Gas Soda kiln. If participants do not attend, all fired pots will be dropped at Radius the following week.

Accommodations:

• Free camping or car camping (be aware, its cold out)!
• Onsite at East Creek: Tiny Cabin, A-Frame, and Airstream available for booking
• In town: Wildwood Hotel (including a bunk house for booking).

Additional Information:

All necessary materials, including glaze, safety equipment, dough, and sauce for pizza, are provided. Participants should bring their own cheese and toppings (gluten-free crusts can be brought for cooking).
