Pit Firing Workshop with Joe Robinson 

10 people max. Indoor/Outdoor. Beginners welcome with advanced material.

Friday, May 5 11:00am- Saturday May 6 4:00p. 

Join Joe Robinson for an instrucitonal pit firing at East Creek! You'll have the opportunity to prepare 2 cubic feet of your work to be fired in the East Creek Groundhog Pit Kiln. All you need is bisque fired pots for this fully supported workshop which includes all pit firing materials and protective gear.

After your arrival at East Creek, we'll have a brief introductory and instrucitonal period, followed by shared time to prepare your bisque fired work for the pit firing. You'll have access to a variety of forest vegitation, as well as a host of pit firing chemicals like copper carbonate, copper sulfate, cobalt carbonate, ferric sulfate, and more. 

We'll prep our pots and load them up in the pit before lighting the kiln and completing an active burn of about one hour. That evening, stay at East Creek to enjoy bbq with firing crew, or head to town for some local fare. 

On Saturday, May 6, we'll unload the pit firing in a concurrent event to the unloading of our spring anagama firing, in which over, 1,000 pieces will emerge from the wood burning kilns. As we unload, we'll refelct on our creations and talk about finishing techniques like sealant, wax, etc. A lunch of homemade chili con carne (gluten free but not vegitarian) is provided on Saturday duriung the unloading.

Schedule: 

Friday: 

-11:00a arrival, orientation and setup

-12:00-2:00p pot prep

-2:00-4:00p pit kiln active burn time about 1 hour 

Saturday: 

-breakfast on your own (use our outdoor kitchen)

-unbrick and unload pit kiln

-additionally: observe the anagama unloading

-afternoon reflection and wrap up
