About the event

Loading/Firing: March 15-17, 2024 (Fri-Sun),

Loading starts at: 10:00a

Unloading: SUNDAY, March 24 at 11:00 am

Join Joe Robinson for a reduction cooled firing of the East Creek ChickenCat kiln. We will conduct a light reduction cooling of the kiln about 4 hours after shut down. We'll do a "light" cooling which will encourage color and surface development but won't be a "heavy" cooling, which would result in less-functional surfaces and more potential for glaze defects. We've found that our standard shino works well in this fring style for functional interiors. Glassier glazes like celedon or tenmoku are discouraged.

Note the Sunday unloading. This is to allow folks to get back from NCECA in Richmond, VA.

*Each participant should plan on attending the loading, at least one day of the firing, and the unloading, with one 8 hour kiln shift per 2 cubic feet, and 1 shelf ground per cubic foot.

If you'd like to bring your own cone 10 clazes that's acceptable; if you want to place those glazes on the outside of your work, please create a ceramic "coaster" for each piece to catch any glaze that runs off. The coaster should have raised edges capable of capturing running glaze. That could be a quick and dirty pinched thing, or tiny plates! If you only use your outside glaze as a liner, no coasters are required.

Registration will be open until the firing is full. A 50% non-refundable deposit is required at the time of signup, with 50% due upon completion of the firing. We must always slightly oversell the kiln to ensure it's filled; your final payment will reflect your actual cubic footage in the kiln. One Pot Pass holders pay in full up front and need not make a final payment; they may also forgoe typical work shifts in favor of just a "visit". All pieces must be bisque fired; some glaze and all wadding is provided.

NOTE: Please only sign up for one slot per person! Signing up for multiple spots (ie selecting 2, 2 cubic foot tickets rather than one, 4 cubic foot ticket) takes a spot away from someone else.

1cf: $50

2-5cf: $45

Newcomers are welcome to sign up online. Some help, but no instruction, is provided. If you need lots of help, please join us for one of our wood firing workshops, which include instructions and materials.
