About the event

Decals and Luster Firing: 2 Days

12 people max. Indoor/Outdoor. Beginner friendly with advanced material.

Thursday, August 3, 10:00a- Friday August 4, 5:00p.

Join Joe Robinson and Aubrey Sloan at East Creek for a 2 day exploration of ultra-low fire applications of Cone 021-017. This basically means, stuff you fire onto finished pots. Most decal and luster work is done on pieces that are fired to a higher temperature like cone 6 or 10. Decal and luster firing also works on wood, salt, and soda fired pieces.

You bring finished pieces that youd like to add an application to, and we'll apply and fire those decals and lusters. Includes a maximum of 2 cubic feet of firing space.

NOTE: There will be no wet clay time, we expect you to arrive with finished (glaze fired) pieces. Works can be glaze fired to any temperature, including lowfire, midrange, and high fire, and atmospheric fired works. The only glaze firings that won't work for these techniques are pit and raku firing, as those processes rely on carbon decoration, a 1200F process that is burned off at cone 017.

Decals

We'll explore cellulose decals and the variations therin, including iron decals, pigment decals, coated vs uncoated decals, and luster decals. All of these can be purchased pre-made (we'll have a selection on hand) or custom ordered (we'll show you how to do that).

Lusters

We'll work with gold and silver lusters, showing application with brush and fine liner.

Wax Screens

We'll create tiny wax screens for a rustic but affordable, underglaze based screen printing technique using strectched screen and wax resist. This can be used not only at ultra low fire temps, but also as a decorating method with traditional slips and glazes.
