3 days making plus two firing cycles.

Making and instruction: September 13-15, 2024, 10a-5p daily

First Load/fire: October 25-27 2024 (1 kiln, 1 cf) Arrive 10:00a

Unloading: Saturday November 2 at 11:00a

Second Load/Fire: November 9-18, 2024 (2 kilns, 4 cf total) Arrive 9:30a

Second Unloading: Saturday, November 30 at 10:00a 

Join Joe Robinson for three days of making at the East Creek studio during summertime, followed by a community firing of our catenary arch wood soda kiln in October, and a community firing of the 40' East Creek Anagama plus catenary in November.

During the making time, you'll get material instruction and have the opportunity to select and use recommended materials at the East Creek studio. We'll also talk specific logistics and answer questions. Advanced techniques will be discussed and practiced- including wadding selection, clay inclusions, glaze and slips, and more. Then, use what you've learned to do your homework and make pieces for the October and November firings. Everything you need for wood firing beyond your bisque is provided, including wadding, glaze, and kiln sundries.

This is a lot of wood firing including making and materials for the seriously interested person. Your attendance is required at the loadings, and for one shift per firing. Unloadings are strongly suggested. Otherwise, attendance is flexible based on your life circumstance. You can join us for as much or as little as you're able.

First Firing, Catenary, October 25-27, 1 cf

On Friday Oct. 25 we will share in the loading of the kiln and light with a small gas burner on Friday night.

Early Saturday morning 10/26 we will begin stoking wood and continue through shut down sometime on Sunday night, including the introduction of soda sometime on Sunday.

On Saturday November 2 at 11:00a, we’ll unload the kiln and work together to clean up and grind shelves.

Second Firing, Anagama + Catenary, November 9-18, 4 cf

We'll load the weekend of November 9. The anagama takes 3 days to load.

We'll light the anagama on Tuesday November 7 and fire though Sunday November 12. We'll load and light the catenary on Thursday November 9 and fire it concurrently with the anagama, Friday thru Saturday.

We will unload both kilns Saturday November 25 in an all day extravaganza, lunch included.

Included:

-3 days of making in the East Creek Studio

-75 lbs clay (3 types, 1 bag ea)

-Bisque Firing for work made during studio weekend up to 5 cf.

-1 cubic foot in the Catenary Arch kiln October Firing to test

-4 cubic feet between November Anagama and Catenary firings.

-Copy of the East Creek Handbook incl. written materials recommendations

-Camping (tent or car) for making workshop, firing, and unloading

Local accommodations are available for a reasonable rate at the Wildwood Hotel in Willamina.
