Join Joe Robinson for two days of bonsai clay work in the East Creek studio in October, followed by a firing of a traditional Anagama wood kiln in November!

Clay experience is not required, nor is bonsai experience. However, if you have experience in one or the other, you’ll be better off. This workshop is targeted toward people who have a bonsai practice and would like to get started in clay, or those who have a clay practice and would like to get started making bonsai pots.

During the making time, you'll get hands-on instruction and if necessary, direct help, in producing two bonsai planters to be fired in our 40' Anagama wood kiln. We will and view bonsai planter styles including Oval, Round, Cascade, and Rectangle. We will discuss clay techniques to build pieces, technical considerations, and planting considerations for issues like drain and tie down holes. The making time includes 2 days in the studio during which you can camp, stay in a tiny cabin, stay locally, or go home in the evening. Programming will run 10-4 each day.

The firing, which takes place over 6 days and nights in our Anagama kiln, is come-and-go-as-you-please. It’s awesome to see the power of such a large kiln being fired and to stoke it yourself. But you needn’t be there the whole time, it’s a really long firing. So, plan on visiting the firing for a day or two when it’s convenient for you if possible. You’ll learn more about the kiln, the firing, and how to participate during the making time in October.
